ALIENS – Day 6 of The One Word Devotional

Today’s word is ALIENS. (Yep, it’s in there.)

There are many things you can do to “process” this word today:

Think on it.

Look it up in Scripture if you choose. An easy way to look up biblical texts on the topic is to go to biblegateway.com and do a search on the word.

Discuss it with others.

Google it.

I’m sure you can think of others. Whatever you choose to do to process this word today, please check back in at the end of the day and let’s have a discussion about your thoughts, experiences, etc.

    • Yes, that’s one of the thoughts I had when deciding on this word.

      1 Peter 2:9-13
      New American Standard Bible (NASB)
9 But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; 10 for you once were not a people, but now you are the people of God; you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.

11 Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul. 12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation.

I also have been thinking today about how the Israelites were instructed to treat aliens and foreigners.

      Deuteronomy 10:19
      New American Standard Bible (NASB)
19 So show your love for the alien, for you were aliens in the land of Egypt.

And, I’ve been thinking all day of an old Petra song. Think I’ll post the video to that if I can find it. 🙂

  2. Aliens – I looked it up in the dictionary and found:
1a belonging or relating to another person or thing, strange
b relating, belonging or owing allegiance to another country or government — foreign
    c exotic
    2. differing in nature or character to the point of incompatibility

I think Paul meant the word to mean relating, belonging, or owing allegiance to another country — that is, the authority of Heaven versus earth. But these days I feel alien in the sense of the final definition — where what I believe is sometimes so different that I don’t feel like I belong here. This world has become so strange to me — how in the world can people do the things we do and treat others the way we do And we as Christians (however that might be defined) seem to be right in the middle of the craziness (e.g. the Westboro gang).

Paul’s words in Ephesian’s 2, where he tells us we are no longer strangers and aliens but are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, is very comforting to me. I feel like I’m incompatible with some of those around be because I don’t belong here. My home, my allegiance is to God. Only when I am back fully in his presence will I feel at home. So it is actually GOOD when I don’t feel like I fit in — it’s the way it’s meant to be!
